Entitlement, 2016

Performance

60min

In this performance, I am thinking about the question of “Who is eligible for a higher education?” or “Who is and who is not allowed to get a higher education?”. Through the action of passing the volleyball back and forth to each other, we replicate that idea and laws of social class, privileges, and funds that are constantly being fumbled in high education in regards to DACA and minority students. My collaborator, Martin Navarro, and I share dual identities with similar experiences, however, there are differences and certain privileges that set us apart.

Performance Video

5min 41sec

As an undocumented student, I face a constant financial struggle. This creates stress and discouragement to continue a higher education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. With a step at a time and some recourses, I am trying to make the possibility of being the first member of my family to graduate from college a reality. I have overcome some obstacles, thanks to a great support from outside and from the School. I believe that I have to be prepared to come across more, mental, political, and systematic obstacles.
